Overview

Converts a rectangular bed and installed depth into bulk cubic yards, 2-cu-ft bags, fabric, staples, and optional edging.

Assumptions

• The bed is rectangular and depth is uniform.
• Bulk volume is area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27.

Worked example

A 10 × 5 ft bed at 3 in is 12.5 cu ft, or 0.46 cu yd; the tool rounds the bulk order to 0.5 yd and bags to 7.

Common mistakes

• Measuring only the planting area and omitting bed extensions.
• Applying mulch against tree trunks or house siding.

Limitations

Settling, irregular curves, and supplier bag sizes can change the order.

Safety and local requirements

Call before digging edging near utilities. Keep mulch clear of siding and tree flare; local fire rules can affect combustible mulch beside buildings.
