Overview

Computes compacted-area volume in cubic yards and converts it to tons using 1.4 tons per cubic yard, with fabric and edging quantities.

Assumptions

• The footprint and depth are uniform.
• The 1.4 tons-per-yard factor is a planning assumption.

Worked example

A 20 × 10 ft area at 4 in is 66.67 cu ft = 2.47 cu yd; at 1.4 it is 3.46 tons, displayed as 3.5 tons.

Common mistakes

• Using decorative stone density for crushed aggregate.
• Spreading deep lifts without compaction where a stable base is needed.

Limitations

It does not account for soil bearing, compaction loss, or truck axle loads.

Safety and local requirements

Keep aggregate work clear of buried utilities and use hearing, eye, and dust protection with compactors.
