Grass Seed Calculator
undefined
Overview
Multiplies lawn area by the seed rate entered in pounds per 1,000 sq ft and rounds to 5-lb bags; it also budgets starter inputs.
Assumptions
- The rate is supplied by the user and should come from the seed label.
- The rectangle represents seedable, not total lot, area.
Worked example
At 50 × 30 ft and 4 lb/1,000 sq ft, seed needed is 1,500 ÷ 1,000 × 4 = 6 lb, or 2 five-pound bags.
Common mistakes
- Using a new-lawn rate when overseeding.
- Selecting seed without checking sunlight, climate, and label restrictions.
Limitations
Germination depends on seed quality, soil temperature, preparation, weather, and watering.
Safety and local requirements
Avoid spreading seed or fertilizer into waterways; follow local watering rules and label precautions.
