Gate Calculator

Overview
Sizes two gate posts, concrete, hinges, latch, and a diagonal brace from gate width, height, post type, and hinge count.
Assumptions
- Brace length is the diagonal of the rectangular gate frame.
- Post-depth guidance is a planning rule, not an engineered footing detail.
Worked example
A 4 × 6 ft gate has a diagonal of sqrt(48² + 72²) = 86.5 in, or 7.21 ft.
Common mistakes
- Installing the diagonal brace from high hinge to low latch.
- Choosing a light post for a heavy or wide gate.
Limitations
It does not calculate gate weight, wind load, hardware rating, or latch compliance.
Safety and local requirements
Check property-line and pool-gate requirements locally; keep gate swing clear of people and traffic.
