Decorative Stone Calculator

Overview

Estimates stone by tons and cubic yards from a rectangular area and depth, plus fabric and perimeter edging.

Assumptions

• Tons use the tool’s 200 area-depth conversion; actual stone density varies.
• The bed has a consistent installed depth.

Worked example

A 20 × 10 ft bed at 2 in gives 200 × 2 ÷ 200 = 2 tons and 33.3 cu ft = 1.23 cu yd.

Common mistakes

• Using gravel density for a lighter or heavier decorative rock.
• Skipping containment where stone meets turf.

Limitations

Moisture, gradation, and supplier conversion factors can materially change weight.

Wear eye and hand protection around stone. Verify drainage paths and local landscape requirements before changing grade.
