Deck Board Calculator
undefined
Overview
Estimates deck boards from surface area and actual board face width, then develops preliminary framing, footing, and fastener quantities.
Assumptions
- Board face width is 5.5 in and boards are modeled in 16-ft lengths.
- Waste is 10% parallel or 15% diagonal.
Worked example
A 16 × 12 ft deck is 192 sq ft. Parallel decking needs (192 × 144 ÷ 5.5 ÷ 12) × 1.10 = 460.8 linear ft, or ceil(460.8 ÷ 16) = 29 boards.
Common mistakes
- Using this takeoff as a joist-span table.
- Attaching a ledger without evaluating the existing house connection.
Limitations
It does not design beams, joists, guards, stairs, footings, or connections.
Safety and local requirements
Deck failures can be severe: obtain required permits/inspections and follow local frost, guard, ledger, and electrical rules.
