Channel Drain Calculator

Overview

Rounds drain length to 3.28-ft channel sections and lists grates, couplings, outlet pipe, and setting concrete.

Assumptions

• Section length is 3.28 ft.
• Grate selection is simplified from drainage width, not traffic loading or manufacturer hydraulics.

Worked example

A 16-ft drain needs ceil(16 ÷ 3.28) = 5 sections; joining those five sections requires 4 couplings.

Common mistakes

• Selecting a grate by width rather than load class.
• Installing channel sections without checking outlet elevation.

Limitations

It does not size the outlet for a site-specific storm or vehicle load.
